Patterns in Nature: Dragonfly
After a summer rich with photo opportunities, I figured it was high time I got back to doing these. I would resolve to resume the weekly routine, but that would guarantee the materialization of some unforseen crisis, so let's just say I have a vaguely general sort of intention to almost-but-not-quite plan an every-7th-day-ish sort of thing.
You may recall the dragonfly my daughter was enamoured with a few weeks ago:
Who could fail to love a bug with such a wondrous colour scheme? (Also, I had no idea they had such cute little faces.)
Breaking down the colours:
I selected a palette:
And created a simple geometric overlay reminiscent of the wing structure:

This would also be quite effective worked as a solid yarn with an appropriately hued handpaint.

WOW! What a gorgeous dragonfly. I really love the color explorations you do.

Oh, I do like that! I can totally see this with a hand-dyed yarn and a solid. :0)

*sigh* Ruth, that's gorgeous. The Dragonfly, the palette and the chart.
I love your color studies, they are so enjoyable and inspirational!

Viewed through my astigmatic eyes (without the corrective lenses), that chart just dances!

I have been enjoying your posts, although it has been awhile since I have posted. As usual, your jewelry is wonderful. I knew you would do a colour exploration of the dragonfly. It is quite stunning.

Very cool. Was just telling my husband I need to get photoshop on my laptop so I can play with the big kids...
I am astounded and pleased to notice my blog's name on your sidebar. As a novice designer, I am in awe of your prowess. Wish you sold online.
Your color sense is impressive, nevermore so than today. Good work.
Blessings!

I love that pattern and palette! I'm not a big bug fan but I'll make an exception for that dragonfly because I just love what you drew from it. That would make a beautiful Fair Isle vest or something. Gosh I can't believe how much I'm itching to do just that with your chart. Particularly since Fair Isle is something I still can't manage neatly yet.
I'm so glad you're going to "occasionally" treat us to your brilliant color study posts again.

That will be absolutely stunning. I love it when you do these breakdowns.

Yay! More Patterns in Nature! I think you have inspired me to finally try fair isle. Also, did you notice how close the dragonfly colors are to the Lost Lake colors? I'm just saying. :-)

I think that looks like a great way to develp fair-isle color combinations. (As if I don't already have enough ways to generate must-do new projects)

Gosh that's pretty! It really would look just fabulous....

what kind of camera did you use?

I have been waiting for your color palette from the head and face of the dragon fly. Knew it had to be beautiful, and as usual you have come up with a remarkable palette and pattern.I especially like the idea of the solid color overlaying the other colors. I am sure it would make a beautiful scarf as well as sweater of some kind.
