Thanks to a snarky remark about my knitwear intensive attire at the bus stop this morning, I was partway into an Abby Franquemont-esque blog rant about the importance of basic kinesthetic textile knowledge to the health of modern society, with parallels to slow food and heritage seed repositories... when there was a knock on the door.
It was FedEx ground, with - well, box doesn't quite do it justice. You know how I confessed a while ago that there were yarn boxes lining the front hall, narrowing it to single lane traffic? Well, this cube is pretty much the full width of the front hall, which is SO not what I needed the afternoon before guests arrive. I'm all for saving the planet by cutting back on cardboard, but honestly - I'm a little worried next time they're just going to offload a sea container in the parking lot and have done with it. On the plus side, I have sock yarn to dye next week.
Anyhow, I've got chaos to organize, so you get the rant another day.
But seriously, do I look that eccentric?
I mean apart from the fact that my boot lace is untied, and I'm squinting into the sun, and slightly tense about the fact that the extremely impulsive girl child is holding my precious DSLR. (I think she did a pretty decent job though, and this is good practice for publishing photos of myself without flinching. I've got 2.. almost 3 FO posts outstanding. Maybe I'll let her do the photos....)
Geez... you are wearing the perfect winter outfit, so what is their problem? Besides, I bet they are cold... C: Too adorable you are...

You look perfectly normal (and warm!) to me. I think the fact that you are standing in snow requires that you wear at least 3 knitted items :)

Aside from the fact that you look great, you're not wearing that many handknits, and even if you were wearing it from the undies on out, why would anyone want to comment negatively on that? You look warm, cozy and fabulous. I think it must have been envy talking.

OK - I was expecting something freakish - looking at the picture I can;t imagone what someone would be objecting to - you look appropriately drssed for a sunny cold and snowy day
Hope you told her/him to STUFF IT!!!

Hey, I think you rock the handknits!

From a stranger? Seriously? People do that?
I think you look marvelous and certainly appropriately attired. And I love the way the hat "talks" to the pants.
So there.

I was expecting a lot more. I mean, really, you should see me when I go out. Or what I cloth my BF in. His Doctor Who scarf is a beast in itself.
I think it was probably more of a combo of the purplish hat with the red pants, which are a stand-out awesome combo in my book, but some people fear color.
I don't. Which is why I don't get comments, just stares.

Wow, that doesn't really make any sense. The only handknits you appear to be wearing are a sweater and a hat. Don't most people wear a sweater and a hat on a cold day? I think this person you encountered just had a rather strange hangup. And they were rude. And if they weren't wearing a hat or a sweater, they were probably cold too. So there.

Try not to let rude strangers get you down! Making ANY sort of negative comment about a stranger's outfit is ridiculously rude, the person doesn't deserve a minute of your time!
And you look perfectly normal, I don't think most muggles would know you were a knitter in that outfit! Chin up!

I wouldnt worry about being called eccentric, I would take that as a compliment. Its the pregnant senior comments that make me balmy.

Hi Ruth,
Snarky remarks reflect more on the speaker than on you. Best ignored in my experience.
And last night the Mercer report featured Whistler, and so natually I looked for you on those beautiful mountains. The internet offers a close yet distant community, it is strange and familiar at the same time. And just so you know, I think you look dashing.

I think you look totally reasonable for your area. If you were to wear that here in AZ, snarky comments (from your kids, right?) might be more understandable.

Some people are just not nice. Don't let them bother you. You are perfectly fine.

Would you look at that crazy lady?! With her cute sweater, cute hat, cute fingerless gloves, and those great red pants! She looks positively cozy and completely normal!
What is wrong with people? Keep rockin' your hand-knits!

You look WARM!

You look fabulous. Don't let clueless people bother you. I love both the hat and the sweater.

loaded question..... :-)

You look normal for my neck of the woods, er, prairies.
Posted by: Poppins | 25/03/2009 at 01:25 PM
Well, you certainly look normal to me. And warm! (Which, really, is what matters.)

Maybe it was the fingerless gloves. In movies for years now it's been the mark of the eccentric, the outsider; it's become a cultural stereotype.

they were jealous.

If you were in NYC, where I live, you would be complimented on your great style and you would be photographed for the sartorialist blog.
