I don't know why they fascinate me so.
I grumble when they snag my legs as I lurch from the garden, distracted by an eager dog on the leash.
I indulge their expansion nonetheless, because I can't bear to skimp on roses.
But I love to look at the thorns for their own sake, their stark, architectural elegance that never fades or falls.
Roses come and go, but thorns are forever.
